As Austin Kleon says, “Steal like an artist.” so I am – joyfully. His books are full of inspiration and permission. The audio is newly out, and super affordable.
Stephen King puts us viscerally in the story, a skill I hope to “steal”, as I move into horror/fantasy writing. He inspires both by Danse Macabre“>Danse Macbre – a craft book.
In Praise of Goofy Movies and Silly Books
My monster fascination is in full swing in December – I blame Danse Macabre. I have always loved Dean Koontz’s Frankenstein Frankenstein (Signet Classics)“>original.
Pure escapism and rowdy fun. Good old Bebe Neuwirth is as the completely lost mom (even funnier if you remember Frasier’s girlfriend Lillith). I watched the sequels for the first time (Jumanji Welcome to the Jungle, Jumanji The Next Level) and found an unexpected delight. Like being back in drama school, it is hilarious to watch really talented actors go against type, and nail it. I loved watching Amy Pond absolutely convince me she’s American, and still a badass.
Stephen King inspired me to look up Sergio Leone’s ultimate western series, including “For a Few Dollars More”. A joyful romp- full of all the spaghetti western archetypes – just plain fun.
Personal Work
I’ve been digging deep, and embracing my generalist – the scientist and the actor, the writer and the martial artist. This month I’ve listened to Range, by David Epstein. I’ve used Coming Alive to tame my addictive tendencies (Bellingham has amazing local cider and beers!)
I’ve also completed a forty-day meditation course that I love so much, I’m starting it over.
Fitness
Pandemic poundage. Stress chocolate. Depression drinking. It has all added up for me. I’ve incorporated 2x weekly strength workouts via zoom trainer, and the C210K app to get my cardio. I’ve needed inspiration and Danse Macabre“>Stephen King?
